Intellectual Property Law Services for Businesses in Armenia

Intellectual property law protects the intangible assets that drive business value - brand names, inventions, designs, and creative works. It gives businesses the exclusive legal right to use, license, and enforce these assets, turning ideas and innovation into protectable, transferable, and monetizable property.

Armenia's IP framework is built on national legislation - including the Law on Trademarks, the Law on Patents, the Law on Industrial Designs, and the Law on Copyright and Related Rights - and aligned with the country's membership in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Trade Organization (WTO/TRIPS), the Paris Convention, the Madrid Agreement and Protocol, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the Eurasian Patent Convention, and the Hague Agreement. This gives rights holders in Armenia access to both strong domestic protection and streamlined international registration routes.

At Retrieve Legal & Tax, we help businesses and creators navigate this framework with clarity and confidence, ensuring every registration, contract, and enforcement action is legally sound and strategically aligned with your goals.

Registering and Protecting Trademarks, Patents & Copyright in Armenia

Each category of intellectual property in Armenia follows its own registration process, protection term, and renewal rules. Getting these details right from the outset determines how enforceable and how valuable your rights will be.

Trademarks are registered with the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Armenia (AIPO) following formal examination, substantive examination, and a two-month opposition period, with the full process typically taking around 8 to 12 months. Protection lasts 10 years from filing and can be renewed indefinitely for further 10-year periods.

Patents are granted for 20 years from the filing date following substantive examination, or as a faster 10-year short-term patent without substantive examination. Pharmaceutical and agrochemical patents may qualify for a supplementary extension. Industrial designs are protected for an initial 5 years, renewable in 5-year increments up to a maximum of 25 years.

Copyright arises automatically on creation, with no registration required, and protects the author's work for their lifetime plus 70 years. Foreign applicants must act through a locally registered IP representative before AIPO, so early coordination with experienced counsel avoids delays and procedural refusals.

  • Trademark clearance searches and availability assessments
  • Trademark application filing and prosecution before AIPO
  • Opposition, cancellation, and infringement proceedings
  • International IP filings through the Madrid, PCT, Eurasian, and Hague systems
  • IP portfolio audits, renewal tracking, and ongoing maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions

What Types of Intellectual Property Can Be Registered in Armenia?
Armenia protects trademarks, patents, industrial designs, copyright and related rights, geographical indications and appellations of origin, trade secrets (undisclosed know-how), and integrated circuit topographies. Trademarks, patents, and industrial designs are registered through the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Armenia (AIPO), while copyright protection arises automatically upon creation and does not require registration. We help clients identify which rights apply to their business and which ones are worth formally registering.
Can I Protect My Patent or Trademark Internationally From Armenia?
Yes. Armenia's membership in the Madrid Agreement and Protocol, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and the Eurasian Patent Convention allows rights holders to extend protection abroad through streamlined international filing systems, rather than filing separately in every country. We help clients choose the most efficient route based on their target markets and budget.
What Can I Do if My Trademark, Patent, or Copyright Is Infringed in Armenia?
We assist clients in enforcing their intellectual property rights through cease-and-desist notices, administrative proceedings, opposition and cancellation actions, customs border measures against counterfeit goods, and litigation before Armenian courts. Depending on the circumstances, available remedies may include injunctions, compensation for damages, seizure or destruction of infringing goods, and other legal measures provided by law.
Do Foreign Companies Need a Local Representative to Register IP in Armenia?
Yes. Foreign applicants are required to act through a registered local IP representative before AIPO; applications filed without one are typically returned without examination. This is one of the most common procedural mistakes we see from international clients, and it's easily avoided with the right local counsel from the start.
Can I License or Sell My Intellectual Property in Armenia?
Yes. Intellectual property in Armenia can generally be licensed or transferred to another person or company. A licence allows others to use your IP while you retain ownership, whereas an assignment transfers ownership entirely. For registered rights such as trademarks and patents, the agreement should be recorded with the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Armenia (AIPO) to be effective against third parties. We help clients draft, negotiate, and register IP agreements to protect their commercial interests.
Is Registering a Trademark Mandatory to Protect My Brand in Armenia?
While not mandatory, registration provides legal advantages, including easier enforcement of your rights.
